Seeing a clinical psychologist for sexuality or gender concerns

An Orchid Tree clinical psychologist can provide counselling for LGBTQIA+ individuals with gender or sexuality concerns. This includes creating a safe, unbiased, and confidential space for clients to discuss their self-discovery journey while focusing on areas of therapy where a psychologist can provide most assistance.

FAQs

What if I need a WPATH letter for HRT or top surgery?

An Orchid Tree psychologist will take a comprehensive approach for trans individuals exploring options for gender-affirming care. We require at least six sessions to cover assessment of gender and psychosocial history, exploration and psychoeducation regarding theories of gender dysphoria and identity, consideration of affirmation pathways (medical and non-medical), discussions about detransition and regrets, and understanding strengths and protective factors that can support adjustments. If a psychologist identifies mental health concerns that may impede informed decision-making about medical affirmation options, we may recommend psychotherapy and we will collaborate with your care team (i.e. GP, or other treating psychologists) to address these obstacles. An Orchid Tree psychologist may want to work with you to learn more about identity through psychoeducation and exploration, or provide psychological treatment on other ancillary mental health concerns.

Is there such a thing as gay conversion therapy?

We understand that feelings of guilt and regret can be common as part of the LGBTQIA+ individuals’ journeys. Our team support LGBTQIA+ individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds who may have experienced such “therapies” previously. Decades of clinical research has shown that there is no psychological basis for any form of conversion or suppression therapy. An Orchid Tree psychologist aims to help LGBTQIA+ clients to explore their gender and sexuality confidentially and gain a deeper understanding of themselves.
